Broken Bells "Broken Bells"

I've literally had this for over a month and I couldn't bring myself to listen to it. For those who don't know, Broken Bells is comprised of James Mercer (The Shins) and Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley). They made a record that sounds like The Shins with some half-hearted synths and faux production effects. And I don't say that just because of Mercer's voice. These songs are all mid-tempo, front & center guitar strummers that don't get too intense one way or another. If this album was a baseball player it would be Livan Hernandez. It ain't sexy but it will eat up 6 innings every time it takes the mound. Don't ignore the Broken Bells buzz but tone it down considerably.

Real Estate "Real Estate"

A good album to mellow you out. Similar to a lo-fi, Oh, Inverted World-era Shins. It works well in the 2 situations when most people listen to music. First, as background noise while they are working. Musically, this album is pleasant and non-disruptive so you can throw on some headphones and start writing that essay. Second, as a legitimate piece of art that one focuses on, mulls over, and thinks deeply about.

Bishop Allen "Grrr..."

On a friend's recommendation I checked out this album. I liked the song "Middle Management" they had on the soundtrack for Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist so I had an idea of what to expect. This is actually a very indie pop sounding record. Makes you wanna tap your toes and clap your hands. It reminded me a lot of the Shins. Specifically Chutes Too Narrow-era Shins. And that's a great compliment for any band.
